What we are planning to do

Tim Burkhart and I, Rick Horton, are going to ride the entire Grand Illinois Trail (approximately 500 miles) between August 16th and August 26th, 2007 to raise money for the Spina Bifida Association of Illinois (SBAIL) and increase awareness of spina bifida. We will mostly be riding through Illinois but we will cross into Wisconsin, Iowa, and Indiana during the course of our ride. We have organized this ride ourselves, there will not be any other riders or support vehicles. We will mostly be staying in motels along the way or with friends or family.

How we plan to raise money

We are asking sponsors to pledge money for each mile we complete, up to 500 miles.  Sponsors who pledge .05 per mile ($25) or more will be entered into a drawing to win one of our PRIZES . We will send out emails to keep you updated on the daily progress of our ride and at the end of the ride we will ask you to send your donation directly to the Spina Bifida Association of Illinois. All donations are tax deductible.

Why we chose the Spina Bifida Association of Illinois

Tim’s four year old daughter Summer was born with spina bifida. The Spina Bifida Association of Illinois has been a tremendous source of support for Tim and his family and this is our way of thanking them and helping them provide the same support for other families.

What is Spina Bifida?

Spina Bifida is the failure of the spine to close properly during the first month of pregnancy and results in varying degrees of paralysis, loss of sensation in the lower limbs, difficulty with bowel and bladder management, hydrocephalus, and learning disabilities. It takes a team of parents, doctors, therapists, teachers, and others to help a person with Spina Bifida achieve maximum potential. But with proper attention, that person's potential is unlimited.

The Spina Bifida Association of Illinois ® (SBAIL) is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life of people with Spina Bifida through direct services, information, referral, research, and public awareness. The SBAIL is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that was founded in 1969.
